Don’t Mess With the Texas Republic

One of the great things about Texas is the continuing consciousness of itself as, in some sense, a separate country. No where else is the state flag flown so often and so prominently, as versus the US flag. On a recent visit, I stayed at a hotel in Houston. In front were three poles with the tallest in the center designed, as usual, for the flag of the feds. Instead, on one side was that flag, on the other was the flag of the hotel chain, and in the center was the Lone Star flag. And now I discover that Texas even has its own electrical grid.
