Campaign Spending

With the revelation of Romney’s million-dollar donor, I am hearing Democrats complain once again about the Citizens United decision that allows corporations to make unlimited campaign contributions. I’ve got news for Democrats, if Romney had the funds to buy up every commercial time slot on TV and radio in the country from now until the Republican primary election (or the general election if he wins the nomination), I still wouldn’t vote for him. And the same goes for other candidates like Bachmann and Obama. They could spend a trillion dollars on their campaign, all donated by corporations, and it wouldn’t make a difference.

The DNC said the Romney incident “suggests frightening avenues for political givers to circumvent the rules – and raises specific questions about the willingness of Republicans to become a receptacle for special-interest money, no matter who is cutting the check.” As if Democrats haven’t always been a receptacle for special-interest money from groups like labor unions.

In a truly free society, any individual, corporation, or special-interest group would be able to give as much as they wanted to any candidate, and without candidates making a list of donors available to the government.
