The august “Newspaper of Record,” the New York Times, once again demonstrates that it is not fit for a free society. In its editorial today, “Waiting for a Leader,” we see that the paper essentially is calling for some sort of economic (and maybe a socio/political) dictatorship. The paper decrees: “Drivers must be given confidence that gasoline will be available, and profiteering must be brought under control at a moment when television has been showing long lines at some pumps and spot prices approaching $4 a gallon have been reported.”

The paper goes on to declare: “Sacrifices may be necessary to make sure that all these things happen in an orderly, efficient way. But this administration has never been one to counsel sacrifice.”

There was nothing in the editorial about the private sector, except the comments about “profiteering.” Thus, if the nation’s journalistic “leader” literally is clueless about private enterprise and the role of private groups, and if the editors of that paper believe that there is only government, government, government, then why in the heck does the Times even call for something like a “free press.” From what I can tell, its view of a “free press” is an entity that preaches statism.
