Antifa Riots in Grant Park, Chicago
July 18, 2020
Yesterday at about 8:30 p.m. and following, Chicago police contended with antifa rioters in Grant Park, Chicago, as the rioters attempted to pull down a statue of Columbus.
The rioters can be clearly seen at this Twitter site. Scroll down to the 22 second video showing young men dressed mainly in black, quite a few with backpacks and black hoods. About 20-25 of them scale a wall during this short video. Their garb and backpacks identify them as antifa.
Other video is here. This video shows the initial BLM marchers moving toward the statue. In some frames can be seen the cluster of black bloc antifa personnel. Their early presence suggests that either BLM organizers inform antifa beforehand or that antifa monitors such protests and mobilizes its forces quickly or both. The hour-long video shows what sorts of people (age, sex, race, clothing, flags, signs) are participating under the BLM banner.
As in some other cities, there are elected city officials who condone the riots and mobs pulling down statues. In this case, two aldermen named Carlos Ramirez-Rosa and Daniel La Spata took the position of ignoring antifa. Chicago has 50 aldermen.
