Another Reason to Love Halloween: Home Haunters

I’ve written on how the celebration of Halloween in the United States exhibits wonderfully the spirit of peaceful voluntary cooperation among neighbors, and how yes, people give stuff away for free based solely on social pressure.

Some people, howoever, don’t stop at candy or at a few decorations. Some people, known as “home haunters” provide free “Haunted Houses” to their neighbors. Some of them are quite sophisticated. And they’re provided free because the home haunters simply like to create them.

There’s a new documentary out on these people which shows that some of the haunters are artists who produce highly polished work, and some are tinkerers who like to build things, and some are performers who enjoy the community. Fortunately, the local government hasn’t yet taken to regulating or harassing these people for running what are essentially small theme parks.
