An Earlier Heisman Trophy Winner

As the current college football season ends – not with a bang but a whimper – it is well to recall words from the 1939 Heisman Trophy recipient, Iowa University’s Nile Kinnick. In accepting his award, Kinnick said “I thank God that I was warring on the gridirons of the Midwest, and not on the battlefields of Europe.” His words were received with great enthusiasm. In 1943, he was killed in a military training mission.
