Did you come up with evictionism before or after Murray Rothbard passed? If you came up with it before what was Murray’s response and why didn’t he change to your view from pro-choice? Thanks, NF
Dear NF: Murray passed away in 1995. See below for a list of my publications on evictionism. As is shown there, my first two publications on this topic were in 1977 and 1978, long before his untimely passing. Why didn’t he change to my view from his pro-choice position? It is simple, he disagreed with me. Do not think, please, that all libertarians have to agree on all issues. Here is a quote from Murray, criticizing both me and Sadowsky: “It seems to me that the problem with the Block-Sadowsky thesis of asserting the foetus to be human is that that act of birth, which I had always naively assumed to be an event of considerable importance in everyone’s life, now takes on hardly more stature than the onset of adolescence or of one’s ‘mid-life crisis.’ Does birth really confer no rights?”
I would say that abortion is one of the areas where not only is there little disagreement between the contending parties in the general population, but, also, within the libertarian movement. Murray Rothbard was pro – choice. Ron Paul, pro – life. It would be exceedingly difficult to mention two scholars with greater libertarian credentials than those two. Yet, they occupy polar opposite positions on this issue. That is where I think my idea of evictionism makes a contribution. It is a compromise between these two viewpoints, and, a principled one, based on the basic premises of libertarianism: the non-aggression principle and private property rights.
