Dear Dr. Block,

There are quite a few companies in China (and I’d imagine other countries) where the government owns, say, 51% of the corporation while the other 49% is publicly traded on stock exchanges. Now, for a benign industry such as, say, logging or mining, would it be contrary to libertarian law to buy shares in these companies?

<<would it be contrary to libt law to lend to, give to, govt? yes, unless you were doing this in a way that would promote liberty; for example, earning profits on this, and financing the Mises Institute with the proceeds

Do you know if this has been written about before?

<<I’ve written lots about this, at least peripherally:

Also, have you heard about fractional reserve index funds? I recently learned that many mutual funds lend out shares to short sellers in order to generate extra revenue without charging higher fees. What do you think about this? Has this been written about before?

<<I’m not familiar with this

How are you doing?

<<doing ok. another book, another article, another op ed, another speech.

Thank you for your time and help,

Nathan Fryzek.
