Robert Barnes in his last night “Bourbon with Barnes” on his locals site discussed the VP pick by Harris. It was classic Barnes, a riveting mix of historical detail (including a hilarious reading of Norman Mailer’s test on what names will resonate with voters) and insights into Harris’s prospects in the coming campaign. Key points:
- The selection of a hard-core progressive represents a fear that the floor was going to fall in turn-out for the core Democratic constituency. This makes Walz similar to Palin’s selection in the McCain campaign.
- But the managerial/public school teacher class will always vote, and vote Democratic. The internal polling by the Harris campaign must be very poor to drive this choice.
- The announcement in Philadelphia indicates that Shapiro was the first choice, and a change was made at the last minute to Walz. Confirms basic Harris qualities: weak, indecisive, incompetent, and incapable.
He ended with three points:
- This selection is a red flag for anyone banking on the presidential aspirations for Harris. She will wilt under pressure.
- This selection shows the deep-seated insecurity of Harris. She feared that Shapiro would outshine her. Walz will not outshine Harris.
- Harris has not shown the ability to run in a competitive election environment.
This portends disaster and debacle for Harris as a presidential candidate, and a foretaste of the tactical errors to come.
