Writes Brad Smith:
Dear Lew, A month before Saddam was given the go ahead to invade Kuwait we were taken into our barracks day room and shown films and pictures of the Kurds that were gassed by Saddam. I was serving at the time with the 7th infantry division. I can think of no other reason why we were shown these films than to prepare us mentally for the war that was soon to follow. It reminded me very much of a 2 minute hate, only longer. They were clearly presenting Saddam as Emmanuel Goldstein. Of course there was no mention made of the fact that while he was gassing the Kurds he had our full support.
Luckily I was determined to get out before this happened and got my discharge 1 day before the stop loss policy went into effect. We had just come back from the illegal invasion of Panama and I was not going to support another war no matter what.
Although I was not officially told that we were invading Panama until we were literally behind barb wires, I had already informed my wife that we would be invading soon. They do telegraph these wars if you know where to look. If you are ever interested, you can read my article or listen to my pod-cast with Scott Horton about the Panama invasion, it’s archived on his site under the title “The truth about Panama”.
Thanks for all your hard work. Your friend in liberty.
