The Left and Private Property

June 13, 2015

Lew: You observed the other day that Noam Chomsky, while quite good at dissecting the nature of the political establishment, remains hostile to private property. This is a hang-up that affects so many on the left, leaving them impotent to transcend the elitist, inhumane nature of all political systems. To help them in the transformation of their thinking, I call upon the words of Max Eastman, himself of Marxist persuasion:

“It seems obvious to me now – though I was slow coming to the conclusion – that the institution of private property, the dispersion of power and importance that goes with it, has been a main factor in producing that limited amount of free-and-equalness which Marx hoped to render infinite by abolishing this institution.”
