The current Democratic favorite is Beto O’Rourke. Trump is the Republican favorite. O’Rourke is favored over Trump by a wide margin in the 2020 election. This is from Predictit, and it changes frequently. Political races are notoriously hard to predict. O’Rourke attracts supportive crowds, which is why he’s a current favorite. His closest competition at this time is weak. Biden is tired and stale. Kamala Harris is unpleasant and annoying.
The bottom line is that O’Rourke’s your standard politician and Democrat, which means he’s a progressive/socialist. His views on foreign policy haven’t come out yet. In Oct. 2017 he wrote “Russia tried to undermine our democracy. We must have a full, thorough investigation to determine Trump’s involvement.”
What do we know about O’Rourke’s positions?
1. O’Rourke believes human global warming via greenhouse gasses is a fact, and he supports efforts to stem it with carbon taxes and alternative (renewable) energy sources.
2. He supports labor unions. He supports anti-trust laws. He supports government-supported training programs for work.
3. He supports federal aid for public schools in low-income areas.
4. He’s for decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana. Decriminalize hemp.
5. He’s for criminal justice reform, such as stopping mandatory sentencing for non-violent drug offenses and eliminating private prisons.
6. He’s 100% pro-choice, including maintaining taxpayer funding for abortion.
7. He supports single-payer healthcare, universal healthcare and expanding Medicaid.
8. He’s in the impeach Trump club.
9. He favors gun control, universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons.
10. He believes in government stimulus spending (Keynesian approach).
11. He supports pay equality for women, same sex marriage, no gay discrimination in public schools.
