Give Them the Oil, Sunnis

August 24, 2005

In all the talk over the Iraqi constitution, now being promoted and imposed by various federal employees, the oil revenues are a touchy subject. The Sunnis, we are told, are worried that the Shiites and Kurds will get all the dough.

No American has any moral standing to tell Iraqis how to run their country, so forgive me, but the oil is an albatross. State oil revenues from the state oil fields make the politicians much more powerful and the people, therefore, much poorer, as has been the case in the entire Arab world.

Besides, no oil, less Western interest. Oil brought you vicious colonialism. What you need, what we all need, is to be left alone.
