Navy Docs Probe Murtha’s Surgery

WASHINGTON — Navy doctors yesterday were reviewing the seemingly routine gall bladder surgery on 77-year-old Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.), who died of complications Monday. “Navy medicine has in place a detailed process for oversight on standards of care,” said a spokeswoman for the Bethesda Naval Medical Center, where Murtha’s surgery was performed on Jan. 28. After his release, Murtha developed an infection and fever and was taken to an Arlington, Va., hospital on Jan. 31. His death triggered second-hand allegations the infection may have been caused when a surgeon nicked the large intestine.

I was surprised to see that Murtha died at a private hospital. Normally high state officials opt for the socialist, single-payer military medical system, where they can be treated like a Central Committee member at a Soviet hospital. Thanks for pointing out that he did.
