I Love P.D. James’s Writing
July 21, 2010
Her bestselling murder mysteries are extraordinary, almost as extraordinary as this wonderfully old-fashioned English lady. Nigel Farndale of the Daily Telegraph interviews her in anticipation of her 90th birthday. But with books, speeches, family, the House of Lords, and all, it is not easy for her to find the time.
UPDATE from Steven St.Jean:
Your blog post about P.D. James makes me wonder whether you’ve ever read any of the Rumpole books? I think you would like old Horace. An English barrister can be hired by either the defendant, to provide a defense, or by the Crown, to prosecute. Rumpole is something of an embarrassment to his chambers, because he will enthusiastically defend the lowest sorts of people, but he will not take a case for the Crown. More than once, the author reveals that Rumpole does not want to be a party to locking a man up in a cage. He sometimes makes some very libertarian pronouncements.
Yes, and I love the old BBC series.
