Millions of American Christians have come to believe in a heterodox theology according to which the physical return of the Jewish people to their ancestral lands is necessary to bring about the return of Christ and the end of the world. Furthermore, during the tribulation that will ensue, believers in this theology will be “raptured” into heaven and spared the unspeakable terrors that will then afflict the human race. This theological opinion would have been news to Augustine and St. Thomas, not to mention Martin Luther and the Protestant movement.
