Eddie ‘The Beast’ Hall is a strong man. One of the strongest, in fact, and he proved that so by becoming the first man to ever deadlift 500kg under the official rules of ‘strongman’.

Later this year the 28-year-old from Stoke-on-Trent will attempt to out-muscle them all by adding the World’s Strongest Man title to a career CV already littered with accolades – including fourth place at last year’s tournament and three consecutive British titles.

But what exactly is life like for the men who could be crowned the planet’s strongest? From eating a kilo for lunch to not fitting in plane seats, Hall reveals some of the lesser-known aspects.

1. We’re all mates really

”The competitors on World’s Strongest Man might all be big, tough guys from all different countries, but we’ll all mates. We usually stay in the same hotel, and will have drinks and meals together most nights. Within that there’re different groups – the Polish guys tend to stick together, so do the Americans – but the camaraderie is always great.

We’ll help each other out, too. If someone has forgotten a bit of kit, like their lifting straps, for instance, someone will lend them a spare. Having said that, everything changes once the whistle blows. After that, we’re in the competitive zone, and total rivals.”

2. The show couldn’t happen in the UK

“The World’s Strongest Man competition is basically a TV show. The way it’s set up is completely built around that, meaning there’s lots of waiting around between events. None of it is set up, obviously, but we’ll only do one or two things a day for two weeks to make sure it works on camera. That’s why you couldn’t hold it in England with a live audience – it’d just be impossible to manage the crowds.”
