Marty McFly's Self-Tying Laces a Reality of the not-too-Distant Future

Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield has whipped up excitement with his revelation that trainers with self-tying laces, like those worn by Michael J. Fox in Back To The Future II, will be unveiled in 2015

Innovation has given us all sorts of weird and wonderful fashion items (hello there, Snacket!) but so far it’s failed to give us anything that’s actually that useful (who really needs a pair of boombox sneakers?). But that could all be about to change thanks to Nike and a certain iconic film franchise.

Those who have seen Back to the Future II will remember Marty McFly’s self-tying trainers by the sports brand – well those very shoes could be a reality come 2015, the year that McFly time-travels to in the film.

Speaking at the opening of the Jordan Brand’s Flight Lab space in New Orleans on Friday, Tinker Hatfield, Nike’s vice president for design and special projects and the designer of many of the brand’s most iconic shoes, revealed the tying technology is in the pipeline.
