Good Riddance But Cold Comfort

Writes Bob Higgs: “The U.S. Constitution requires that a person assuming the presidency swear or affirm that he will ‘preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution,’ so one might think that anyone seeking the presidency would have familiarized himself with the Constitution’s provisions. Surely, then, I am not the only one startled to hear Rudy Giuliani say, upon bowing out of the campaign, that ‘John McCain is the most qualified candidate to be the next commander in chief of the United States.’ Does this disappointed wannabe dictator and former U.S. prosecutor really not know that, under the Constitution, the United States has no commander in chief and that only its military establishment has one? It is a great relief to see Giuliani exit the field, but it is cold comfort so long as the warmongering McCain remains a leading candidate.”
