The Name that Depression Contest, Part II

Previously, see here, I introduced a contest to give a title to our present depression. It is now time to give the results of the voting.

But before we do, let us introduce a few introductory matters. (Hey, I’ve got to keep the suspense going!) You will remember that contestants were asked to rate the options according to the following schedule: 3 points for first choice, 2 points for second, and 1 point for the third option.

Some people, however, either in addition to doing that, or instead, offered yet additional names, other than those I offered for voting (based on past surveys of mine, and, again, to be seen here). Since some of these new suggestions were very intriguing, I hope no one will take it amiss if I also list these new candidates. Naturally, none of these new entries could have won, since they were not on the ballot, and only their creators, not the general LewRockwell.com voting public, knew of them. (In retrospect, I should have either forbidden this practice, or encouraged it; in the event, I did neither. Mea culpa. Put this down to my inexperience with regard to running such contests.) I also list the names of these new contributors, so that everyone can have a handy convenient record of this entire matter.

With no further ado, here is the outline of what appears below. I. New suggested depression titles, II. new authors, III. the results of the voting. I also include my own personal favorites among both the IV. older and V. newer suggested lists. Section VI. concludes with a grand finale, a massive list of all suggested names, both older and newer ones.

I get to give my own votes since it took me a lot of work to put this all together, and I am nothing if not a devotee to the labor theory of value (just kidding about this last part!)

I think we are all looking for the same things in a title: first of all, accuracy and naming names (of philosophies, persons) if at all possible, but then, also pithiness, humor and presence. Does the title "grab you" or not is the bottom line, here. The reason, I think, the votes were so all over the lot was because these criteria are so subjective. Also, I confess, I’m a sucker for rhyming and alliteration (don’t ask), so titles featuring these dimensions place higher on my list than they would otherwise deserve.

Thanks to all who have participated both by suggesting titles, and for voting. This has been an exhilarating experience, putting this all together. But, I think I’m going to bow out of the contest business. Believe me, it takes a lot of time.

If I had the energy to do this, which I do not, I would run this contest, twice again. I would forbid all new entries; we already have quite enough of them. First, I would offer all of the options in section VI. And, then, I would do it again, listing only the top 10–20 or so for a final vote. In this way, we could eliminate candidates that only garnered a few votes, and focus everyone’s attention on those options that scored the highest.

Whew, this has been quite an experience.
