Fleeing Military Slavery

July 30, 2014

Writes a friend:

I live in east Slovakia, 4 km from the border with Ukraine.  At least one Ukranian has come to stay with his friend in our village to escape this draft.  He is a father with 5 children.  I am sure many others who can are also doing so.  He and our neighbors were interested to hear about the failed vote to sell 49% of the gas pipeline to western interests. Too bad there isn’t a Slovak/Ukranian/and-or/Russian version of LRC. Suffice it to say that my wife and I are feeling a bit worried here.  Obviously the fighting is still a fairly small regional conflict a thousand miles away, but this is also similar to what Europeans thought 100 years ago about some events in Sarajevo.  In the back of my mind is the thought of “when will this come too close that we need to flee?” as I certainly don’t count on artillery fire keeping clear of our village.
