re: Put Universities Out of Business

David Shockey writes to Fred Reed:

I truly enjoyed your article.  It was my first exposure to your humor but it won’t be the last.

I don’t know if you are aware of it, but there is a revolution starting in the software industry that is related to your article.  Coding schools have popped up all over the country that teach cutting edge skills to students so that they can get jobs in the tech industry without a college education.  Many companies are hiring these students at high salaries even though they have no previous experience and only 12 weeks of training before starting their job.

One example of this is Hack Reactor in San Francisco.  They screen all applicants thru a live coding session, accept only a small percentage of applicants, have a near perfect record for job placement after training, and the average (last time I checked) salary for graduates in their first job is $105K.  Students looking for their first job after gaining a CS degree do not fare nearly as well.

So, something like what you propose is happening but in this case they spurn the idea of a college degree altogether.

UPDATE from Jim Davies:

It’s the best, and funniest, article I’ve ever read on LRC. Well done indeed.
