JFK Tries to Solve His Own Attempted-Murder Mystery in New Alternate-History Novel "Surrounded by Enemies: What if Kennedy Survived Dallas?" by Screenwriter Bryce Zabel

What if JFK had survived the assassination attempt on November 22, 1963?

That’s the provocative question posed and answered by Bryce Zabel’s controversial new novel, Surrounded by Enemies: What if Kennedy Survived Dallas?, now available through Amazon and other retailers as an eBook, audiobook, and trade paperback.

In time for the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination, the award-winning Hollywood screenwriter/producer cleverly imagines the twists that history would have taken if the shots missed — and JFK (and his attorney-general brother Bobby) fought back against the forces out to destroy him.[amazon asin=B00E881Z2M&template=*lrc ad (right)]

In Zabel’s smart, fast-paced, meticulously researched “alternate history” of the Sixties, John F. Kennedy’s dark personal and political secrets lead to shocking but plausible plot surprises. They include published revelations of the President’s extramarital affairs that trigger a bruising battle over his possible impeachment.

“If Kennedy woke up in the White House on November 23rd, 1963 knowing that the day before somebody had tried to execute him in broad daylight on a public street before a global television audience,” argues Zabel, “life would not have returned to normal — not for the Kennedy administration nor for the forces that tried to murder him.

“There would still have been investigations but they would not have been colored by respect and grieving for a martyred President,” Zabel concludes. “Instead, the questions would have been asked during a national presidential election. John Kennedy would have found himself in a political fight for survival, even after the actual physical threat of Dallas had passed.”[amazon asin=1626363137&template=*lrc ad (right)]

“Surrounded by Enemies” is cleverly presented as a commemorative 50th-anniversary retrospective assembled by contemporaneous journalists on the staff of a fictitious newsmagazine, Top Story. Its narrative incorporates professionally designed faux-magazine covers depicting JFK with luminaries he met only in Zabel’s parallel universe, including the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show.

The novel’s iconic cast of 1960s characters also features Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Neil Armstrong, Cassius Clay, Marilyn Monroe, Lee Harvey Oswald, F. Lee Bailey, and Lenny Bruce.
