Writes Tim McGraw:
Hi Lew,
Thanks for writing a very good article on the virtues of the free market and inequality. Equality before the law is a good idea, but economic equality is madness. Kurt Vonnegut wrote a very good short story about how making everyone equal in every way led to insanity and a surreal world of trapeze artists wearing weights like horses in a horse race. Golfers use handicaps to try and create a level playing field on the course. Of course, this system is abused when money is involved. Sandbaggers, golfers who claim a higher stroke handicap than their real one, are all too common at country club tournaments.
Everyone may think they are equal to everyone else, but as Dirty Harry says, “A man’s got to know his limitations.”
