He went over the heads of the Washington establishment and talked directly to his base.  He threw down the gauntlet to the Washington establishment. He took no prisoners. There was no olive branch.  This is unique in American inaugurals.

It was a 4th of July speech.  He did not pontificate.  It was not a speech written by a professional speechwriter.  It was a populist speech.

It will haunt him, since it promised so much.  But the media will not be able to suppress it. He used them to speak to his base. He really did an end run around the media.  It will send them into apoplexy.
