He and the main part of Grant’s army held the Confederates in Vicksburg by a forceful feint on the bluffs there and only arrived at Port Gibson after the Federals had taken the town. Whether he said Port Gibson was too pretty to burn, who knows, but no reason not to believe it. He was there.
