If I were Trump, these are the first two things I would do if it looks like I will be the nominee:

1. Find a running-mate who is not only qualified and who I think can help me win the general election, but who’s at least as unacceptable — if not more so — to the Powers That Be than I am. I would tell him that I picked him partially because I fear assassination, so he knows what he’s getting into.

I would tell him that, effective immediately (not just after we take office), he is under the strongest possible orders directly from me to never be anywhere near me physically if he can possibly help it. If we’re elected, I would get him an office on the other side of town, rather than in the West Wing — out of my own pocket if necessary. I would insist on separate planes/separate cars with separate routes whenever we must travel to and from the same place.

2. Augment my Secret Service detail (I don’t think he can choose to forego SS protection) with my own security, paid for out of my own pocket. They would all be paid lavishly so that they’re loyal to me, and they ideally would be people I’ve known for years (although he probably already had this before he entered the race).
