Making Incandescent Bulbs Last Longer

Writes Chris Condon:

Dear Lew:

Many people have been switching out their incandescent bulbs for LED on the grounds that LED last longer. But there have been serious questions about whether LED bulbs are good for your eyes long-term. And you can make your incandescent bulbs last a lot longer with just 2 easy tricks. First, purchase 130-volt incandescent bulbs in preference to 120-volt. 130-volt bulbs last much longer than 120-volt. Secondly, put your incandescent bulbs on dimmers. Bulbs on dimmers last much longer than other bulbs. In my bedroom, I have 11-foot ceilings, so it’s a pain in the neck to have to switch out those bulbs. But I have 130-volt bulbs in my ceiling fixtures and they are on dimmers. I have not had to change those bulbs in at least 5 years, probably several more than that. I also have my bathroom vanity bulbs on dimmers. Before I put the dimmers on my bathroom vanity bulbs, I used to have to change out a bulb around once a month or so, now much less ofte
