Gothic Beauties

Writes Paula Deist:

It has been decades since I visited Notre Dame de Paris.  But the day after the fire, I was fortunate to be able to visit St. Vitus Cathedral (and the adjacent St. George’s Basilica) while in Prague.  The many gargoyles alone were tremendous!  Did you know that in the Gothic design the gargoyles function as water spouts and work with built in gutters to convey water away from the side of the building, thereby preventing masonry and mortar erosion?  I had forgotten the sheer magnitude of fine detail and craftsmanship in every inch of those Gothic European beauties, inside and out.
