Writes Ginny Garner:
Lew,
Thousands of parents in Connecticut peacefully protested to keep the religious exemption from a mandatory school vaccines for their children. The protest was held outside the state capitol building in Hartford while the state Senate debate the bill HB6423. In defiance of the protesters – the largest crowd one state senator said he had ever seen in his 29 years as a legislator – the state Senate voted to pass the bill. The House had already passed the bill so it now goes before the governor for his signature. The protesters, mostly parents with their children, gathered outside the legislative building for 7 1/2 hours listening to speakers and watching the debate and vote in the Senate chamber on outdoor screens. Speakers included Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Chairman of Children’s Health Defense, and Del Bigtree, High Wire weekly program host and founder of the Informed consent Action Network. State Sen. Heather Somers, who led the fight on behalf of the parents, spoke to the crowd after the vote along with Sen. Eric Berthel and John Kissel. They encouraged the parents to keep fighting and protest organizers instructed the crowd to work to vote out the legislators who stripped the religious exemption.
The High Wire live streamed the event which is still available for viewing.
An article reporting the vote.
