After “Scooter” Libby was indicted, George Bush surfaced to recite the mantra that “everyone is presumed innocent and entitled to due process and a fair trial.” Dick Cheney came out of seclusion long enough to echo the refrain that “in our system of government, an accused person is presumed innocent until a contrary finding is made,” along with the “opportunity to answer the charges and a full airing of the facts.” Why do these same standards not also apply to the persons who have been held at Guantanamo for a number of years, without “due process” or a “fair trial?” … Continue reading With a Straight Face
