“Walking Jack” Perry: An Election Parable

A word of warning about the big “win” in this election:

A prophet was on his way to deliver a message when he came to a river crossing. He saw the water was higher and he would need to swim across. But as he began to enter the water, he heard a voice calling out to him. The voice came from a snake, which said unto him, “I see you are going to swim across the river. I need to get across, too, and if you ferry me across this river, I will also reward you with a hidden treasure!” But the prophet replied, “Not so! You are a snake! You will bite me! I am a prophet and have no time for treacherous snakes!” But the snake said unto him, “Why would I bite you for doing me a service? I promise you that I will not bite the hand that serves me. And I promise you that I will reward you with hidden treasure.” Therefore, the prophet put his faith in the promises and agreed to ferry the snake across with him.

Upon reaching the other shore, as he let the snake down on dry ground, the snake suddenly turned around and bit him. As the prophet lay dying, he called out to the snake, “What have you done?! How could you have repaid me so?! Did I not do as you asked? Did I not believe in your promises?!” But the snake said unto him, “You fool! You knew I was a snake when you picked me up! And besides all of this, if you really were a prophet, you would have foreseen this and not trusted in the empty promises of a snake!”
