Trump’s Perfectly Innocent Phone Call

A transcript of Trump’s July 25 call to Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky appears here. It’s from CNN.

CNN’s headline is false. It says “President Donald Trump repeatedly pushed for Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, and his son, Hunter, during a July 25 phone call,…”

Trump absolutely didn’t “repeatedly” push. He made a request once as follows

“There’s a lot of talk about Biden’s son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great. Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you can look into it… It sounds horrible to me.”

Trump has in his favor that these two issues are already in public discussion and have been widely discussed for several years.

Hillary Clinton, after the transcript’s release, said “The president of the United States has betrayed our country.” This, of course, is a total falsehood. All that Trump did was to ask that the wheels of justice turn in Ukraine so that two issues of longstanding concern here in America might receive some enlightenment, those being the origination of Russiagate (and Crowdstrike’s part) and the other being the roles of the two Bidens.

Clinton also had the gall to add the following lie, that her words were “not a political statement”.

Of course, many other Democrats (and Mitt Romney per usual) have piled on with their own reprehensible accusations of Trump as they attempt to breathe life into an impeachment bandwagon that will win them votes.

Both Schumer and Pelosi have issued statements as part of their own feeble attempts to save face. Pelosi tried to argue that the telephone call’s content didn’t matter! It’s the sequence of events that showed corruption, she argued.

Suddenly, Pelosi, who has ignored them for years, becomes an advocate of context and (disguised) quid pro quo. It’s too late, not after years of lying. No one believes a word she says of her innuendoes. She’s simply trying to make the best out of the deep, deep hole into which her party has fallen.

Schumer’s statement is along the same lines and equally unpersuasive in making a case against Trump.

Note also that three Democratic senators “wrote to the Ukrainian government in May 2018 urging it to continue investigations into President Donald Trump’s alleged collusion with Russia in the 2016 presidential campaign”. Where were Pelosi and Schumer when their own party sought Ukrainian assistance in American judicial and political inquiries? Where was Hillary Clinton suggesting that these senators were betraying their country?

The Democratic party went off the deep end when Trump was elected. They’re sinking deeper and deeper into a delusion of their own making. Russiagate has failed as a way to bring Trump down; and it holds at least some promise of prosecutions that blow back upon Democrats. Now the delusion of the most rabid anti-Trump contingent has seized upon a perfectly innocent phone call in order to revivify its impeachment bandwagon. This time around, the party’s bigwigs like Pelosi seem to be joining the anti-Trump festivities. They calculate that impeachment will help them in an election year. Pelosi’s rhetoric constantly invokes phrases of constitutional and American defense, as if she’s saving the country by impeaching Trump. However, her hatred of Trump and her frustration at seeing her agenda thwarted are more likely the true drivers of her anti-Trumpism.
