‘The’ Speech

50 years ago today, I cheered Reagan’s “A Time for Choosing” on the little b&w TV in the local Goldwater headquarters, and thought Ronnie might sway the election. So much for my political judgement. Though I was bothered at the time by his foreign policy belligerence–as I was by Barry’s–I thought they were no worse than LBJ, while their domestic policy views were vastly better. Of course, it was all a trick; they both turned out to be neocons. That was the one and only time I ever I gave my heart and soul to a Republican presidential nominee . I even donated $500, a lot of money for a kid. In Massachusetts, the liberal GOP establishment walked out, so even youngsters could have significant roles in the Goldwater campaign. I did, and I learned my lesson.

UPDATE I am ashamed to see that $500 in 1964 is, according to the government, almost $3,800 today. The miasma of politics!
