A British Coastguardsman is fired for his daring clifftop rescue of 13-year-old schoolgirl. He broke the safety regs by taking too much of a chance, says his superior.
UPDATE from Michael Sinclair: “Having served in the Coast Guard (1956-64) I am very glad I never served under any Commanders as feckless as the ones in this article. The official motto of the Coast Guard is ‘Semper Paratus.’ Our unofficial motto was ‘You have to go out, but you don’t have to come back.’ Many a time our 165′ cutter was sent out in near hurricane conditions to rescue either downed pilots and/or sinking fishing boats. On this side of the pond Mr Waugh might well have been put up for either a Silver or Gold Lifesaving Medal. A good example of the nanny state run amok.”
