The Most Frightened Nation: Why the United Kingdom Will Never Be the Same

The Most Frightened Nation: Why the United Kingdom Will Never Be the Same, by Lionel Shriver

The shade of Winston Churchill must be spinning in disbelief in Hell.  So much for that indomitable British spirit personified by Mrs. Miniver or in the WWII Frank Capra propaganda film, The Battle of Britain.  This pitiful defeatist cowering in the face of adversity due to the pandemic is pathetic and very revealing.  Cowering — to shrink away or crouch especially for shelter from something that menaces, domineers, or dismays. “They all cowered silently in their places, seeming to know in advance that some terrible thing was about to happen.” — George Orwell.

A long time colleague observes:

Indeed. They are done. Done. Your Orwell quote is dead on. In the end the once great empire, a pathetic puny shell of its once greatness, held a pillow over its own face and expired quietly and willfully. Millions of Chinese laughed.  And crushed the freedoms of those living in Hong Kong.
