The Little Frumer Boy endorses socialized medicine and high taxes
on soda pop and junk foods in order to discourage obesity. Frum justifies his support for high taxes by pointing out that, thanks to Medicare and Medicaid (he could have also added government policies which encourage over-reliance on third-party payers), the costs of unhealthy lifestyles are socialized. Rather than calling for an end to the government polices which discourage people from taking responsibility for their own lifestyle and health, Frum uses the unintended consequences of prior government intervention to justify more government intrusion into our lives.
