Writes John Bolstad: You mentioned a while back that government might try to subsidize newspapers, particularly if the NY Times or the Washington Post is in danger of failing.  Here’s an article in The Nation (I heard the authors’ interview on NPR) unapologetically calling for such subsidies.  They say it’s ok because the government did it in colonial times!  They also claim that newspapers are a “public good,” and that the press acts as a “watchdog” on the government!  What about Judith Miller?
