I celebrate the government holiday of Thanksgiving because my parents did, but I am aware that Lincoln established it for purposes of war propaganda. In part, it was intended to fool Americans into thinking that the country was born in Massachusetts in 1620 rather than Virginia in 1607. Like most Lincolnian tricks, it worked, but I’ll still be serving Southern ham for dinner instead of Northern turkey.
