The Tax that Will Not Die

The FairTax, or national sales tax, or, as Murray Rothbard described it, the “permission to live” tax. “Libertarian” Gary Johnson says he supports replacing the income tax with a 28 percent national sales tax on goods and services. This is even a higher rate than most Fairtaxers propose. Johnson emphasizes that his plan is “revenue neutral” and “includes incentives for low-income families.” This means that the federal government can still have a $4 trillion budget and the rich can be robbed to subsidize the poor.

I have written many things over the years about the evils of the FairTax and consumption taxes. See, for example:

Is Making Taxes ‘Fair’ the Answer?

There Is No Such Thing As a Fair Tax.”
