Andrew Bacevich has a review of Robert Kaplan’s latest pro-Empire screed and panegyric to the American sojer, Imperial Grunts, in the latest issue of The Nation. As much as I hate to say it, especially on this web site, Bacevich (in describing why Kaplan loves sojers so mnuch) manages to capture every really good reason why I have never liked evangelical Christians or Southerners very much (though I keep an open mind and try): Like Kipling, Kaplan is smitten with barracks rooms, mess halls and the “world of beer, cigarettes, instant coffee, and chewing tobaccos” that soldiers ostensibly inhabit.
