Socialist Is an ‘Old Codeword for Black’

Butler, my favorite example is this column by Lewis Diuguid. He says that because Martin Luther King, E.B. DuBois, Paul Robeson, and A. Philip Randolph were called socialists, calling Obama one is a racial slur. Yet King described himself as a Marxist, DuBois was a decades-long member of the central committee of the Communist Party of the USA, Robeson was a prominent member of the CPUSA, and Randolph was a leading member of the Democratic Socialists. That’s not the sum of these men, but they were all red-blooded socialists.
