First it was House Speaker John Boehner saying that the U.S. may ultimately “have no choice” but to deploy ground forces to defeat ISIS. Now it is House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy saying: “I think Special Forces and others are probably going to have to be on the ground.” The main problem Republicans have with Obama is not Obamacare, it is that he is not enough of a warmonger and interventionist.
Yet, former Secretary of State Robert Gates told an assembly of Army cadets at West Point back in 2011: “In my opinion, any future defense secretary who advises the president to again send a big American land army into Asia or into the Middle East or Africa should ‘have his head examined,’ as General MacArthur so delicately put it.”
