Remembering Butler Shaffer

In digging up some of my old photos, I came across this photo of my dear friend, Butler Shaffer, from 2009. We were in Minneapolis, and Butler was speaking in a typical libertarian-variety speaker setting: a high-end, snazzy, classy, basement warehouse room somewhere near Uptown.

The day after, Butler and I drove to the great (but no longer) booktown of Stillwater, Minnesota, about 40 minutes northeast. We hit the many bookstores there, and while we were at St. Croix Antiquarian Books, his wife Jane called, and she asked to talk to me. “Don’t let Butler bring home any more books,” she said. Me: “Too late; he’s already looking to get in line with a small stack.”
