According to a journalist who has interviewed the new Pope, Benedict XVI named himself after Benedict XV primarily because of the latter’s anti-war activism. Benedict XV (1914-1922) was opposed to this first “war for democracy,” and in 1917 delivered a Plea for Peace which demanded an end to hostilities.
