Unfortunately, the conspiracy theorists I’ve met place the blame on the rich, wealthy, and incorporated. Yes, they are ambitious and can bankroll a conspiracy, but without the coercive state backing them up, they have no real power. If it’s a government conspiracy, then you run into the problem that the state can’t do anything right. As one reader pointed out to me, the feds couldn’t turn a profit on a brothel in Nevada.
