Lew, I learned to type also on an IBM Selectric in 10th grade (1980). Probably the most useful course I ever took. I don’t miss the manual typewriter but I do have a fondness for it. And I hear that for those upgrading to the new iPad 2 and looking for a use for the old one, someone has come up with a hack to change an old typewriter into a USB keyboard for the old iPad or other computer.
