Peter, I read more of what Carl Gibson has been writing on the Huffington Post, and I must admit this guy really is from Journalism School Central Casting. Yet, he only is reflecting what he has been taught by the academic set which tells us that government is all-knowing, all-embracing, and all-loving. However, I find it supremely ironic that this guy is claiming that we “grow up” by viewing ourselves literally as children in need of a government parent.
First, and most important, the academic left believes there is no such thing as opportunity cost, or at least there is no opportunity cost when government acts. (There IS opportunity cost, however, when people are permitted to keep money they have earned and not have it taxed. Yeah, Gibson tells us that, too.) Second, academic leftists really do have a childish faith in government, as evidenced by this hilariously serious website by Douglas Amy, who teaches (What else?) politics at Mount Holyoke College. So, the academic left really believes that we are bad children who need their wonderful, parental government to lead them into the straight paths. As for things like the U.S. Government imprisoning millions, SWAT teams killing innocent people in drug raids, and other such things, well, if the bad children would just listen to and obey their Wise Government, shooting and imprisonment would not be necessary!
