The handcuffing – and leg-cuffing – of the five year old girl provides a vivid reminder that the principal purpose of the government school system is to instill in the minds of children the duty of obedience to authority. This girl had interests of her own that were incompatible with the agenda of school officials. Her purposes had to be physically suppressed if the school was to retain its dominance over young minds.
