re: The Big Salute

Butler, maybe that’s you in the back row of one of these photos of school children making the original socialist salute, the salute while reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the State, authored in the 1880s by socialist propagandist Francis Bellamy. He was the cousin of Edward Bellamy, author of the nineteenth-century socialist utopian novel, Looking Backward, in which the world of 2000 is a socialist “paradise” (you know, like the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, North Korea, Cuba, Pol Pot’s Cambodia, Communist China, etc.).
Dr. Thomas DiLorenzo [send him mail] is a former professor of economics at Loyola University Maryland and a longtime member of the senior faculty of the Mises Institute. He is the author or co-author of eighteen books including The Real Lincoln; How Capitalism Saved America; Lincoln Unmasked; Hamilton's Curse; Organized Crime: The Unvarnished Truth About Government; The Problem with Socialism; and The Politically-Incorrect Guide to Economics.
